China prepares to counter any US trade penalties

China's government is seeking advice from think tanks and policy advisers on how to counter potential trade penalties from U.S. President Donald Trump, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The Trump administration may impose higher tariffs on Chinese steel and furniture, the sources say.

In response, China may find alternative suppliers for agriculture products or machinery and manufactured goods. It also could cut exports of mobile phones and laptops.
