Blog: City Butcher signage at ‘Saw’ escape room a ‘coincidence’

Posted online

It’s rare that Springfield ties to Las Vegas come across my newsroom desk.

An SBJ.net search brings up Big Whiskey’s franchisee; Advanced Sleep Technologies’ iSense Sleep’s launch; and Allegiant Air’s destination between Springfield-Branson National Airport and “Sin City.”

It was a fun coincidence, then, when a Reddit user found a possible tie between Springfield’s City Butcher and Barbecue and the official “Saw” escape room in Las Vegas based on the series of horror films.

The post shows “City Butcher” signage at the Las Vegas attraction that looks remarkably similar to the Springfield restaurant’s logo and lettering. A dissection of a pig and the white-lit City Butcher lettering looks almost too close to be a coincidence. The letters even curve and curl in the correct places.

I feverishly sought out to find out if there were local ties to the “Saw” escape room. Gregory Holman at the Springfield News-Leader had the same idea, as we both posted questions on the “Saw” Facebook page. I give him props for beating me to print.

Yesterday evening, I received an unsigned email from City Butcher stating: “Purely coincidence. No relation tied to us.”

So, there you have it. While the similarities are obvious, the two City Butchers don’t appear to be connected. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if the escape room owners came across the Springfield City Butcher and were inspired. I never heard back from them to find out.

I would love to see Cody Smith and the team at City Butcher do some kind of tie-in. The potential seems like a lot of fun. If you happen to be in Vegas, the grand opening of the escape room is today, according to its Facebook page. Be sure to get a selfie in front of its version of City Butcher.
