65K attend Route 66 Festival

Posted online

The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival in downtown Springfield had attendance on par with the 2022 and 2019 events, according to a city official.

The Aug. 10-12 festival, which celebrates the Queen City's connection to the Mother Road, brought in roughly 65,000 attendees, said city spokesperson Cora Scott.

"That is right in line with 2019 and 2022," she said via email.

Around 65,000 people attended the 2022 festival, tying a record set in 2019, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. The festival was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event included a car and truck show, parade, live music, a talent search and the appearance of the Super Bowl LVII Lombardi Trophy and former Kansas City Chiefs players.

“Birthplace of Route 66” refers to the telegram sent from John T. Woodruff’s Colonial Hotel in downtown Springfield, asking for the number 66 to be used with the highway.
