2013 40 Under 40 Honoree: Richard Maltby

Posted online
When Richard Maltby relocated to the Queen City three years ago, he didn’t hesitate to dive into the community.

The attorney and new partner at Carnahan, Evans, Cantwell & Brown PC is the president-elect of Construction Specifications Institute’s local chapter and will assume his duties in July. Maltby also is a member of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce’s Voice of Business Committee, an initiative started three years ago for which he speaks before the Springfield City Council on relevant issues.

Additionally, Maltby is the founding member of the Ozarks Construction Referral Network; sits on the board of Friends of Abilities First; belongs to Urban Districts Alliance; and has served as a board member and volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement, which teaches schoolchildren about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

“I view Springfield as a terrific community for raising my two daughters,” Maltby says, “and I look forward to many opportunities to be involved, both civically and professionally, for years to come and to play a small role in ensuring this continues to be a great place to live.”

After graduating from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2002, Maltby stayed in the Gateway City to practice before moving to Springfield in 2010. He concentrates on construction, architectural, engineering and development law; business and real estate litigation; and alternative dispute resolution. He has represented clients in the state, region and throughout the U.S.

“I have had the great fortune of serving as a lead lawyer on two of the largest construction arbitrations in the state of Missouri … (that consumed) more than six years of my life,” Maltby says. “The cases involved months of hearings, millions of pages of documents, hundreds of witnesses, lots of travel and, in the end, some success for our clients.”

Maltby has counseled a diverse array of clients on both public and private multimillion-dollar projects, including affordable housing, airports, assisted-living facilities, historic preservation, hotel and resort development, mixed-used development, utility and infrastructure systems, and water distribution facilities. He conducts in-house training seminars for construction companies, speaks at conferences and writes on a variety of construction law topics.

Maltby was recognized as a 2012 Rising Star by Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers, and was named a 2011 Up and Coming Lawyer by Missouri Lawyers Weekly.

The Ozarks Construction Referral Network, which Maltby launched in 2010, seeks to promote economic opportunity in the local construction industry through online networking among members who work in Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. OCRN now has 440 members.
