2013 40 Under 40 Honoree: Emily Johnson

Posted online
Emily Johnson’s professional horizon extends well beyond the borders of the United States – let alone Springfield. The 29-year-old Drury University alumna has worked with advertising agencies in three continents.

“For years, I worked on accounts with budgets in the millions of dollars,” Johnson says of her time working internationally in Sydney, Australia, as well as with Florida firms in Naples and Miami, and Springfield’s Noble & Associates Inc.

Johnson was art director at DDB Sydney and M&C Saatchi in Australia, before returning to the states as an account executive and junior art director for B2 Advertising in Naples, Fla., as assistant art director for Sapient Nitro in Miami, Fla., and an art director at Noble & Associates.

She eventually settled down as director of accounts at Sprinfield’s Revel Advertising.

In partnership with Chris and Nicole Jarratt, Revel Advertising was founded in August 2010 and boasts Missouri State University Athletics, Metropolitan National Bank, Barnett-Davis Dental, Paragon Architecture and Rhoads Real Estate as clients.

“My partners and I started Revel to help regional small-business owners and nonprofit organizations who don’t have million-dollar budgets and are in dire need of professional materials, creative campaigns and strategic media plans,” Johnson says of the agency’s objective in working with Springfield-area businesses.

As a board member and marketing director for the Springfield Business Builders Club, Johnson rebranded the group’s logo and online presence as an aid to keep membership growing for the networking organization.

Outside of her professional work, Johnson reaches out in the community as a board member with Bolivar’s Care to Learn chapter and volunteer with the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks.

She also mentors local college students interested in advertising through portfolio or resume reviews and job shadowing opportunities.

“Over the past two years, I have spent a lot of time working with college students to help them better prepare for professional careers,” Johnson says. “I believe that teaching is the next step in giving back to the community that has given so much to me.”

It’s support her former professors are glad to see.

“As an alumna of our department, she has emerged as one of our most engaged and enthusiastic supporters,” says Regina Waters, Drury communication department chair, of her former student.  “Our advertising and public relations program greatly benefits from Emily’s willingness to share her industry knowledge and practical expertise.”

Contuning her own education, Johnson will begin her pursuit of a master’s degree in communcations in 2013.
