Project Description: An addition to Fire Station No. 6 and the SPD South Station incorporates a situational training room for Police and Fire personnel, and three multipurpose classrooms, said project architect Jonathan Dodd of Buxton Kubik Dodd Creative. The lower level will house the Springfield Police Academy, including weight training and physical training rooms, classrooms and lockers. Dodd said the facility will have an outdoor classroom and training area. Designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards, the building will feature rappel positions on exterior walls, elevated egress doors for building rescue training and roof hatch access for overhead roof entry training, he said. The project is funded by city-issued bonds, paid by 2004 level property taxes, according to Vince Crunk, the city’s interim director of public information.
