Voters in the Greene County cities of Springfield and Willard will have the chance to weigh in today on tax issues.
In Springfield, voters will decide whether to renew the 1/4-cent Capital Improvement Program sales tax, which funds road and streetscape improvements in the city.
Willard voters will decide whether to increase the general operating fund property tax levy to 75 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The money would fund the hiring of full-time firefighters and emergency medical personnel, as well as general operating costs. The current operating levy is 25 cents per $100 of value.
Greene County Clerk Richard Struckhoff said he expects voter turnout in Springfield to be between 5 percent and 10 percent - similar to the turnout from the last CIP tax renewal in February 2007 - while turnout in Willard is expected to be between 15 percent and 20 percent.
"Our most common call today is from people who are mad because their polling place isn't open and they think they should be able to vote for the city sales tax," Struckhoff said, noting that only residents who live inside Springfield city limits can vote on the sales tax issues. Roughly two-thirds of the county's polling places are open today, he said.
