2014 Trusted Advisers Lawyer: Michael Miller

Posted online
After 10 years in practice, Michael Miller has developed a solid client base, but he’s not satisfied with the status quo.

“I have reached a point where I ... (have) earned clients that use my service on a repetitive basis and refer me to their friends and associates,” says Miller, a managing member at Lowther Johnson Attorneys at Law LLC. “I have only been able to have repeat clients and word of mouth referrals because my clients are satisfied with the service and advice I provide. However, still being relatively young for the legal profession, I remain hungry to serve.”

Miller began at Lowther Johnson as an associate attorney in 2004 after two summer clerkships at the firm. He became a member in 2010 and was promoted to managing member two years later.

His practice focuses on real estate, banking, commercial transactions and litigations statewide and landlord-tenant law. Clients include corporations, business owners and individuals.

“These individuals each require different types of advice, but I strive to provide the same high-quality level of advice to each of them,” Miller says.

Corporations and business owners rely on his council to evaluate the risk of proposed actions and the best ways in which to operate. Small-business owners especially look to Miller for his recommendations on best practices to limit exposure to liability.

“Many owners of small businesses are required to run the day-to-day operations of their company and do not have the time or expertise to analyze the legal issues as it relates to contracts or the impact of the contract language operations,” Miller says. “They rely on me to assist them with these legal issues, and the trust they have in me alleviates a great weight that could be on their shoulders, allowing them to do what they do best.”

Trust is especially important when working with individuals, for whom Miller often completes real-estate transactions or advises in contract situations.

“If these individuals do not trust me, they will not take my advice,” he says. “I attempt to earn that trust by being knowledgeable about the law and following through with what I tell them I will do.

“Regardless of the client, I try to stress to them that I care about their situation, and their success or well-being is important to me.”

Justin Wagner, chief lending officer for Mid-Missouri Bank, regularly works with Miller, who has represented the bank for several years.

“Over that time, his honesty and knowledge have proven that he has the bank’s best interest in mind,” Wagner says. “Michael talks with us and treats us not only as clients but as people who he truly wants to see be successful.

“It is obvious that he makes our issues and concerns a priority and works with us, not just for us.”

Miller sits on committees for the Missouri Bar and Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association; is on the board for The Victim Center; and is on the campaign committee for Children’s Miracle Network.[[In-content Ad]]
