Summer 2013 Architects & Engineers Project Report

Editor’s Note: Welcome to the Summer 2013 Project Report. Local architecture and engineering firms were invited to submit projects showcasing their work for this feature, which is published semiannually.

Dake Wells Architecture Inc.
Brentwood Branch Library, 2214 Brentwood Blvd.

Architects Dake Wells Architecture Inc. and Clark Huesemann are teaming up for the Springfield-Greene County Library District’s $2.5 million Brentwood Branch Library renovation that would increase its collection area by nearly 30 percent and is organized around the incorporation of a service window and book-drop station. Renovations also include updating the original restrooms, a high-performance mechanical system, new electrical service to the building and energy-efficient electric lighting. Project engineers are White River Engineering Inc., civil; and Colvin Jones Davis LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The project is slated for completion in 2015.

Jack Ball Architects PC
Southern Reynolds County School District FEMA shelter, 1 School St., Ellington

Jack Ball Architects PC is designing a $5.5 million Federal Emergency Management Agency shelter for the Southern Reynolds County School District. Paid for through a FEMA grant and county bond initiative, the addition would connect the existing elementary and high school buildings and include a community FEMA shelter/gymnasium, a kitchen, cafeterias, locker rooms, stage and band room. Other additions include a new elementary library, classrooms and restrooms. Engineers are Toth & Associates Inc., civil and structural; and LaRose & Duncan Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The project is set to be complete by December 2014.

RIO Contractors LLC
Complete Electrical Solutions warehouse, 601 N. Grant Ave.

Architect Rio Contractors LLC is set to complete a $500,000 warehouse facility for Complete Electrical Solutions LLC by Oct. 1. Rio also is serving as general contractor on the 5,000-square-foot project on an adjacent lot to Complete Electrical Solutions’ headquarters at 715 W. Tampa St. Project engineers are Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural, and Crocker Consulting Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing.

Hood-Rich Inc.
University Plaza Hotel exterior improvements, 333 S. John Q. Hammons Parkway

Architect Hood-Rich Inc. is working with University Plaza Hotel owner John Q. Hammons Hotels & Resorts on a $4 million, multiphase renovation project. Phase I, slated for completion by year’s end, focuses on refurbishing the property’s exterior and adding new signage. Set for spring 2014, phase II improvements include the first-floor lobby, restaurant and bar. During phase III, a Caffeina’s Internet Cafe is scheduled to open at the hotel in 2015. Project engineers are Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural, and Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Frank Z Design LLC is contracted to serve as landscape architect.

Slone Architects PC
Old Kinderhook Hotel & Conference Center, 20 Eagle Ridge Road, Camdenton

Slone Architects PC has signed on as architect of the $8.5 million Old Kinderhook Hotel & Conference Center for owner Old Kinderhook Inc. The historic golf course and country club is adding a two-phase development expansion, including an 82-suite luxury hotel, a conference center and banquet facility to accommodate 300 guests, meeting rooms, lounge, fitness center and indoor pool and spa. Osage Beach-based Thomas Construction Inc. will serve as general contractor. Project engineers are Miller Cos., civil; Wells & Scaletty LLC, structural; and Latifi Engineering, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Slone Architects also will provide interior design work for the project slated to be complete by summer 2014.

Marshall-Waters-Woody and Associates Inc.
All Saints Anglican Church, 2751 E. Galloway St.

Marshall-Waters-Woody and Associates Inc. is working with general contractor Brian Beckers Construction Inc. and engineers Lee Engineering Inc., civil; JS Smith Consulting Engineers PC, structural; and Smith-Goth Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing, for the $6.5 million church. The 12,500-square-foot building sits on approximately five acres. The Gothic architecture is enhanced by the use of a rough-hewn limestone veneer with smooth limestone surrounds. The transept plan is divided into three distinct areas accessible from the centrally located narthex. Entry to the narthex is gained through the 55-foot-high bell tower. The church’s estimated completion date is May 2014.

Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc.
Sky Eleven, 331 Park Central East

Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc. is architect on the $15.5 million Sky Eleven, a historic renovation of the 1911-built Woodruff Building. Owned by Historic Woodruff building LLC, the renovation is slated to include 96 residential units with retail on the main floor,  a community lounge, movie theater, concierge, underground vehicle and bike parking, outdoor swimming pool and outdoor kitchen area. Engineers on the project are Wells & Scaletty LLC, structural, and Pellham-Phillips Architectural and Engineering Inc., mechicinal, electrical and plumbing. General contractor is Build LLC, with interior design work by Joyce Buxton and Stacy Sproule. The Gershman Mortage-financed project is expected to be complete by fall 2014.

nForm Architecture LLC
Studio 417 at Farmers Park, 4139 S. Nature Center Way

NForm Architecture LLC is designing the 4,500-square-foot Studio 417 for owners Paul and Hannah Catlett at Farmers Park with an estimated completion date set for December. The infill includes new Studio 417 Salon and Hudson Hawk Barber Shop locations, as well as Springfield’s first blow-dry bar. The design includes walnut and zinc panel accents in an overall clean-lined modern build out. Interpres Buliding Solutions LLC will handle mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer work. A general contractor has not yet been selected.

Bates & Associates Inc.
Nixa Early Childhood Center, Nixa

Bates & Associates Inc. is architect for the Nixa Early Childhood Center, a 25,000-square-foot facility near the downtown Nixa Public Schools administrative offices. The center would provide services for children ages 3 to 5 with significant developmental delays. It will have six classrooms, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, administrative staff and assessment teams. Engineers are CJW Transportation Consultants LLC, civil; Mettemeyer Engineering LLC, structural; and Colvin Jones Davis LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Completion is slated for August 2014.

H Design Group LLC
St. Charles Public Works Facility, Elm Pointe Industrial Road, St. Charles

H Design Group LLC is architect and interior designer on the city of St. Charles’ $8 million, bond-issued public works facility, which would centralize the city’s water department, street department, fleet maintenance, public works and engineering departments into a unified campus. Engineers on the project include, Walter P. Moore and Associates Inc., civil; Mettemyer Engineering LLC, structural; and Henderson Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Construction is scheduled to and wrap up by December 2014.

Sam A. Winn & Associates Architects PC
Cabool R-4 School District FEMA safe room, 1025 Rogers St., Cabool

A $1.9 million project for the Cabool R-4 School District, Sam A. Winn & Associates Architects PC is designing a 6,400-square-foot Federal Emergency Management Agency safe room and cafeteria capable of holding the district’s 1,026 occupants during a tornado. The project also includes a fully equipped kitchen. General contractor is Gentry Construction Inc. Engineers are J.R. Haney Associates, structural, and LaRose & Duncan Engineering Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The project is set for completion in May 2014.

Insight Design Architects LLC
Retail music store, Springfield

A $1.5 million store designed by Insight Design Architects LLC, the transformation of an unoccupied office space into a retail destination for local musicians and students is being accomplished through a small addition and renovation of the existing structure. The front facade incorporates a saw-tooth profile to address the adjacent intersection and display instruments. The plan separates public and private spaces through circulation and features a number of practice area pods and open areas for multiple disciplines to interact. The project is set for completion in 2015.

Paragon Architecture Inc.
The Salvation Army Thrift Store, 320 E. Seventh St., Joplin

Paragon Architecture Inc. is designing a $2.1 million thrift store for The Salvation Army. The Joplin thrift store would help rebuild by funding programs which give back to the community. The store will be the permanent location for the Hope Memorial formed from pieces of the former store, which was destroyed by the May 2011 tornado. Engineers are Tri-State Engineering Inc., civil; J&M Engineering, structural; and Smith-Goth Engineers Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing. The project is slated for completion in May.

Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc.
Multifamily housing, 1014 E. Walnut St.

Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc. is the architect on the 1014 E. Walnut St. build for owner Bryan Properties. The building would replace a single-story apartment in the Walnut Street Historic District with eight two-bedroom units designed to appeal to university-related tenants and downtown enthusiasts. Engineers on the project comprise Lee Engineering & Associates LLC, civil; Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc., structural; and Colvin Jones Davis LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing. Estimated completion is set for July.

Colvin Jones Davis LLC
Cambridge Motor Sports, 5233 S. Campbell Ave.

Colvin Jones Davis LLC is mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer for the $800,000 Cambridge Motor Sports showroom. The project is designed as a high-end, used-car dealership and showroom, specializing in foreign vehicles and online sales. Owner Cameron Wells is working with architect Bates & Associates LLC and additional engineers Olsson Associates Inc., civil. An estimated completion date is set for April 2014.


Crawford, Murphy and Tilly Inc.
Revitalization of historic downtown Branson

Crawford, Murphy and Tilly Inc. is leading a five-year planning, design and construction effort to revitalize the core six-block area of historic downtown Branson, with the goal of creating sustainable complete streets. Improvements being developed include sidewalks, decorative paving, accessible ramps, site lighting, public art, site furnishings, street trees, planters, enhanced landscaping, utility and infrastructure improvements, stormwater management, upgraded restroom facilities, trolley stops, festival locations, as well as enhancements to signage and way-finding throughout the downtown area. The city of Branson has tentatively allocated $5 million toward improvements. The planning phase of the project is nearing completion, with design already underway for the first phase of implementation. Construction is scheduled to coincide with the winter tourism slowdown.

Wells & Scaletty LLC
Falstaff’s Local and Lofts, 311 Park Central West

Wells & Scaletty LLC is structural engineer on the SWM Real Estate LLC-owned Falstaff’s Local and Lofts. A renovation of the building just off of the square, the first floor comprises the approximately 2,700-square-foot Falstaff’s Local Bar & Grill. The second floor would house two 1,200-square-foot lofts. Bates & Associates LLC is handling design work and Mike Deam Construction serving as general contractor. Latifi Engineering is contracted to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing work on the project slated for completion in November.

Smith-Goth Engineers Inc.
Marshall Hill safe room, 101–149 S. Hickory St., Monett

Smith-Goth Engineers Inc. will serve as mechanical and electrical engineer for an $850,000 community safe room for the city of Monett. The 4,125-square-foot neighborhood community center would incorporate a small kitchen, a large community room, restrooms and storage areas. The building has been designed to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines and is currently under FEMA review. Paragon Architecture Inc. will handle design work, with additional engineering from Toth and Associates Inc., structural, and Olsson Associates Inc., civil. The project is expected to be complete by May 2014.

GeoEngineers Inc.
Interstate 84 directional microtunnel

Faced with difficult geometry and geological conditions, the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Co. LLC northeast upgrade project engineering and construction team of Willbros Engineering, lead civil; GeoEngineers, Inc., geotechnical engineer; and Michels Directional Crossings, contractor, developed and installed an innovative trenchless crossing. The project utilizes 42-inch-diameter Permalok casing pipe installed in a vertical curve, cartridge style. The first trenchless project for Tennessee Gas using direct pipe system, GeoEngineers developed a design methodology for curved, jacked steel pipe. Michels began construction in June and is expected to finish in November.

Olsson Associates Inc.
U.S. Highway 65 and Battlefield Road diverging diamond interchange

Olsson Associates Inc. is contracted to provide project management and roadway design services for the $10.2 million Missouri Department of Transportation diverging diamond at U.S. Highway 65 and Battlefield Road. Right-of-way and final roadway and bridge design plans include the removal of existing bridges over 65; construction of a new bridge, retaining walls and auxiliary lanes; design and placement of required traffic signs and signals; design of stormwater drainage; and intersection improvements at Battlefield and Woodstock Drive. Other project engineers are Hanson Professional Services, structural and Trekk Design Group LLC, traffic design support. The design is set to be complete by June 2014, with construction wrapping up by fall 2015.

Pellham-Phillips Architects and Engineers Inc.
Hampton Inn, 3370 E. Montclair St.

Pellham-Phillips Architects and Engineers Inc. is working with Earl Steinert of EAS Investment Enterprises Inc. on a five-story Hampton Inn. The $6.8 million Great Southern Bank–financed project would include standard rooms, suites, a full-service breakfast area, indoor pool, spa, fitness center, outdoor patio and conference room. Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc. is architect on the project expected to be complete in April 2014.

CJW Transportation Consultants LLC
Kings Avenue and Primrose Street intersection

CJW Transportation Consultants LLC is working with the city of Springfield to complete the design for $2.5 million in intersection improvements at Kings Avenue and Primrose Street, near Cox South. Improvements include the addition of eastbound and westbound through lanes, signal modifications, pedestrian enhancements and a regional detention basin. The project is a cost-share initiative between the city and CoxHealth. Improvements are expected to be complete by summer 2014.

Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc.
Jordan Valley Community Health Center addition, 440 E. Tampa St.

Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc. is structural engineer and architect for the $6.2 million addition and renovation of the Jordan Valley Community Health Center. The two-phase project consists of a 30,900-square-foot renovation and a 19,130-square-foot addition. Scheduled to be complete in October 2014, the project is funded in part by a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and includes an adult primary care center, pain management clinic, open-access urgent care with pharmacy, lab and X-ray services, General contractors are DeWitt & Associates Inc. and Carson-Mitchell Inc., with Alberici Healthcare LLC serving as construction manager. Additional project engineers are Lee Engineering & Associates LLC, civil, and Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing.

Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc.
Texas County Memorial Hospital, 1333 S. Sam Houston Blvd., Houston

Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc. is mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer on the $2.7 million surgery center and Federal Emergency Management Agency safe room for Texas County Memorial Hospital. The new constriction would add a 3,936-square-foot FEMA safe room, 7,100-square-foot surgery center and renovate 1,200 square feet of the hospital. HMN Architects Inc. will design the facility, with additional engineering support from Popular Bluff-based Smith & Co., civil, and Toth and Associates Inc., structural. The project is estimated for completion in November 2014.

Miller Engineering PC
Salon Service Group Inc., 1520 E. Evergreen St.

Miller Engineering PC is working with Salon Service Group Inc. and owner Gino Barbo for structural engineering work on the company’s new corporate headquarters, wholesale distribution center and retail store. Larry Snyder & Co. will serve as general contractor, with architecture work by Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc. Additional engineering work is being contracted by Whitlock Engineering LLC, civil, and Colvin Jones Davis LLC, mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
