Since 2004, Springfield Business Journal has recognized a class of 12 companies, aka the Dynamic Dozen, comprising fast-growing businesses. Chosen by a formula that factors in year-over-year revenue and percentage growth for three years, the Dynamic Dozen companies are those that have pushed onward and upward for growth. Particularly after the recession hit, this growth-based award has focused on companies that have achieved impressive results in spite of the market conditions they faced. And now, as the local and national economies see signs of a turnaround in many sectors, those companies that were able to weather the storm are rising to the top amid ongoing recovery.
This year, in addition to honoring 12 Ozarks companies for their growth, the SBJ team is debuting three new awards – Top Local Executive, Top Local Financial Executive and Top Local Sales and Marketing Executive – in a bid to recognize the individuals who play key roles in helping companies achieve growth. The inaugural individual class comprises Steven Brady, CEO and chairman of the board, Anderson Engineering Inc.; Mike Finch, associate general manager-finance and chief financial officer, City Utilities; and Rodney Jetton, marketing director, Schultz & Summers Engineering.
While the business faculty at Ozarks Technical Community College verified the formula results for the Dynamic Dozen companies, we asked an independent panel of judges to help us choose the recipients. We know that it could not have been an easy job, but we appreciate their help tremendously, because it keeps SBJ staff out of the award-selection process. This separation, we feel, is essential to protecting the integrity of our signature awards.
There is little doubt that the last few years have been daunting for businesses in nearly every sector of the economy. Whether overall recovery is underway remains to be seen, and answers to that question likely vary depending on who is asked. But as you will see from the pages that follow, clearly, there are companies that are marching forward and capturing more revenues through strategies that include physical growth, new services or streamlined strategies to maximize resources and meet market needs.
