To say that small business continues to play a role in the economic recovery would be an understatement. Small business has proven to be a stabilizing force in the economy by stimulating economic growth and job creation. In fact, small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms; employ just over half of all private sector employees; pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll; and have generated 64 percent of net new jobs over the past 15 years.

Helping small businesses succeed is the mission of SCORE. A resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration, SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small business start, grow, and succeed.

Nationwide, SCORE clients started a total of 58,637 new businesses in 2010, and created 71,449 new jobs, proving that SCORE is the one of the most cost effective catalysts for economic growth. In fact, for every federal dollar appropriated to the program, SCORE clients paid an average of $548.79 in federal taxes.

Springfield SCORE Provides Free Mentoring and Low Cost Workshops
Springfield SCORE was established in 1971, and today, with more than 35 experienced business owners and managers serving as volunteers, the chapter is making a difference in the business community. In addition to free counseling services and low-cost workshops, SCORE clients can also access the national website, www.score.org, for a variety of tools to help start or improve their businesses. The website has been recently renovated to provide easier access to an array of business information. Additionally, local workshop topics and schedules can be seen on the web sites, with online registration available.

Gallup Survey - Clients More Likely to Succeed With Mentoring
SCORE has conducted national surveys which show that clients are more likely to succeed after multiple SCORE counseling sessions. Those studies have led SCORE to shift their focus from short term, transactional counseling to longer-term mentoring relationships.

“Our counselors volunteer their time, experience, and knowledge to help small business owners,” District President Dennis Jones added. “While they have always provided advice on all aspects of business ownership, now they will offer ongoing mentoring relationships.”
