2012 Choice Employers, Employee of the Year: Angie Burlison

Posted online
Angie Burlison has a knack for rallying employees at Tuthill Vacuum & Blower Systems.

As marketing communications manager for the multimillion-dollar manufacturer of industrial vacuum pumps and pressure blowers, Burlison is known to vocalize a need or initiative, garner support and accomplish a team goal.

For instance, she recruited 18 co-workers to form bowling teams for the Big Brothers Big Sisters annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake.

Along with the team members’ contributions, a breakfast fundraiser and coffee-can donations added up to nearly $800 for the cause.

“I am very passionate about the things I get involved with and love asking others to share in that with me,” Burlison says.

“The people I work with are more than just co-workers. They are my friends.”

Earlier this year, Burlison helped organize fundraisers for a co-worker’s family whose 3-year-old boy, Landan Bland, had brain cancer.

“We collected money for their travel expenses to and from St. Jude’s. I organized a Pancakes for Landan event to raise funds for them and even delivered meals to them daily when they were given weeks to spend with their little boy,” she says of the Bland family who created the Team Landan Facebook page followed by more than 22,000 people.

Since Landan’s Aug. 29 death, the Bland family has created a charity for pediatric cancer patients.

“I encouraged my co-workers to get involved and was humbled by their giving hearts to our friend in need.” In Burlison’s marketing role, she manages a $500,000 budget to direct corporate branding and advertising, public relations, product launches, sales collateral and event planning.

She’s led eight product launches, including market research and coordination with the engineering team, that net $2.6 million in annual sales.

Wearing her multimedia hat, Burlison recently helped concieve and produce a series of corporate video clips, titled “We’re Up To Something Great,” posted at TuthillVacuumBlower.com and YouTube.

One of the videos features stories of employees, shedding light on the company culture.

A Tuthill employee since 2003, Burlison has advanced through a series of promotions in the marketing department.

Before joining Tuthill, she worked two years as sales and marketing manager for Storage Systems, a manufacturer of food service equipment. Burlison, who completed Leadership Springfield this year, is dubbed a “Radical Leader” around the Tuthill plant after completing the company’s Radical Leadership and Coaches Training, a part of its Conscious Company initiative.

“The training helped me to learn tools to use with co-workers during conflict and everyday communication,” she says.
