Career center to provide support for Mammoth workers

Officials with the city of Springfield’s Department of Workforce Development have promised to help workers affected by the upcoming closure of the Mammoth manufacturing plant in northeast Springfield.

The 3300 E. Pythian St. plant - scheduled to close by the end of October, according to KY3 - employs over 200.

Those workers can visit the Missouri Career Center-Ozark Region for job counseling and assistance, including retraining, help filing unemployment benefits and workshops on topics including money management due to job loss, job preparation, resume development and online applications.

“A significant difference between Mammoth’s and previous plant closures in our area, is that the job market is better right now,” said Mary Ann Rojas, the city’s director of workforce development, in a news release. “Employers have already begun to contact us. They have jobs to fill, which is very promising. We will be hosting hiring events in the future, and employers will be invited to participate.”

The Mammoth plant, which produces heating, cooling and ventilation systems, traces its Springfield roots to 1977. Operations were privately owned before being purchased in 1999 by Providence, R.I.-based Nortek Inc. (Nasdaq: NTK), the parent company of Mammoth Inc. The plant was founded by William Eugene Bennett and formerly operated as Webco, until it was sold in 1986 to Robert Carter. Carter owned it until the Nortek purchase, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

Mammoth leases the space from 3M Co., which operates an adjacent plant at 3211 E. Chestnut Expressway. According to the Greene County assessor’s website, the 15.6-acre property has a 2015 taxable appraised value of $3.8 million.

A Nortek spokesperson could not be reached for comment this morning.[[In-content Ad]]
