Habitat for Humanity aims to prop up Woodland Heights

Posted online
Habitat for Humanity of Springfield selected the Woodland Heights neighborhood as its first targeted community under its neighborhood revitalization program.

Work is scheduled to begin July 16, when volunteers meet at The Courageous Church, 2848 N. Broadway Ave., and team up with Habitat of Humanity construction workers and Woodland Heights residents to remove debris and yard waste from neighborhood alleys, according to a news release.

Habitat for Humanity’s neighborhood revitalization program helps Springfield homeowners repair their homes and properties. Spokeswoman Abby Glenn said nonprofits would work to offer in-kind donations, though residents would sometimes be required to pay for materials.

“When we build or repair a home, it benefits one family. One decent home in a blighted neighborhood, while a good start, is not the only help a community needs,” Habitat for Humanity of Springfield Executive Director Larry Peterson said in the release. “Neighborhood revitalization will make a greater impact on a neighborhood because it involves residents and partners working together to make decisions that lift up an entire community. We’re just one partner among many that are invested in Woodland Heights and its success.”

Habitat for Humanity’s announcement comes a day after the city of Springfield officially launched its Zone Blitz campaign designed to improve the quality of life for Zone 1 residents in northwest Springfield.

Zone Blitz is a partnership with over 200 organizations and 300 individuals that has some 60 projects expected.
