Posted online
Nine Springfield-area CEOs this morning presented business ideas before a crowd of 220 at the AMC Springfield 11 IMAX Theater during Springfield Business Journal’s and sbjLive’s inaugural 90 Ideas in 90 Minutes event.

Listed below are the CEOs in alphabetical order and a sampling of ideas from each. A full list of each of the executives’ 10 business ideas will be published in SBJ’s Dec. 12 print edition.

Geoffrey Butler, founder and principal architect, Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc.

Idea: Learn to listen.

“You may know a lot, but everybody knows something you don’t. Ask and listen.”

Crista Hogan, executive director, Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association

Idea: Be aware of your brand.

“Just brand it. It’s how people relate to you. Just say no to cyber saturation. Manage your message.”

Mary Kellogg-Joslyn, co-owner, Titanic Museum Attractions

Idea: Empower your employees.

“I’ve seen grown men cry when a fellow employee recognizes them. It’s powerful.”

Teresa McGeehan, owner-operator, 15 area McDonald’s

Idea: Lead by example.

“Clarity is important and everybody needs a North Star. Provide that direction.”

Bob Noble, founder, Noble Communications

Idea: Keep egos in check.

“Managing egos is like holding a bag of bobcats. You just keep them from killing themselves.”

Jonathan Putnam, owner/managing director, Brick & Mortar Coffee

Idea: Identify your core values.

“Simplicity is hard because complexity is the natural order of life.”

Jeff Schrag, founder, Mother’s Brewing Co.

Idea: Make room for love in your business and personal lives.

“Find love somewhere and nurture it in your life. Then you will move forward as a person.”

Clif Smart, president, Missouri State University

Idea: Create rules to live by and let your employees know about them.

“Hire based on character and leadership style more than experience.”

Crystal Webster, executive director, Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks

Idea: Manage your priorities.

“Not everything needs to get done. Take big objectives one bite at a time. Make it a bite you can chew.”
