Household debt nears 2008 levels

U.S. household debt is climbing closer to 2008 levels.

At the end of 2016, the debt load was $12.58 trillion. Debt rose by $460 billion during the year, the largest increase in nearly a decade.

Consumer debt reached a record high in 2008 of $12.68 trillion.
