Ikea recalls 29M dressers after deaths

Posted online
Swedish furniture giant Ikea advises all furniture be anchored to the wall, but that doesn’t always happen. Now, the company has issued an international recall after three children in two years died as the result of a dresser collapse.

Consumers with the dresser style know as Malm – and its six variations – are instructed to stop using them immediately if not properly secured.

“The recalled chests and dressers are unstable if they are not properly anchored to the wall, posing a serious tip-over and entrapment hazard that can result in death or injuries to children,” Ikea officials wrote in a news release.

According to USA Today, consumers who own a dresser or chest that was manufactured between January 2002 and January 2016 can receive a full refund. Ikea also is offering free wall-anchoring repair kits to consumers and a one-time free in-home installation upon request.

In each incident, the dressers in question were not anchored properly.
