After the U.S. Treasury Department levied a $2 million fine against Exxon Mobil, the company quickly struck back with a lawsuit.
The fine is for what Treasury officials called a violation of sanctions imposed in 2014 on Russia following its incursion into Crimea.
In a suit, Exxon is challenging the Treasury’s filing that said the company should not have done business with Igor Sechin, the president of Rosneft, a Moscow-owned oil company. Sechin was the subject of U.S. sanctions on Russia following its incursion into Crimea.
Exxon officials say previous government statements indicated the company could do business with Rosneft, just not Sechin's personal business.
