Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium is once again up for recognition as the best aquarium in North America.
The Springfield attraction was nominated for USA Today's 2021 10Best poll. It's the only Missouri aquarium on the list, which includes the New York Aquarium, Seattle Aquarium and Texas State Aquarium.
"It is one of our amenities that improves our quality of place and is a symbol of Springfield’s economic vitality,” Mayor Ken McClure said in a news release announcing WOW's nomination. “These things are vital at all times, but especially now."
The poll is active through 11 a.m. May 24. It’s currently ranked No. 1 out of 20.
If WOW gets the nod, it will be the third time the attraction has been named the best North American aquarium by USA Today readers. It received the recognition in 2020 and 2018. It did not rank in the Top 10 on the 2019 list.
The aquarium and museum attraction reopened in September 2017 after a nearly 10-year hiatus.
The Republic School District is on track to open its Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-grade students for the 2025-26 academic year.
