Wheeler's Furniture plans closure

Posted online

A 90-year-old Springfield furniture store is closing.

Wheeler's Furniture posted a notice on its website that a liquidation sale is being held Feb. 14-15 for invited customers at the 3861 South Ave. store. The sale will open to the public on Feb. 16.

"We are sincerely grateful for all your support over the years," the notice reads. "The Bennett family has made the decision to pursue other interests."

Richard Bennett and his wife, Glenda, purchased Wheeler's Furniture in 1986 from the Parsons family, according to past reporting. When Richard died in 2014, Glenda became owner and CEO. The store was founded in the late 1920s, according to the Wheeler’s Furniture website.

Glenda died in April 2022, according to her obituary posted to GreenlawnFuneralHome.com.

A recent Missouri secretary of state filing for Wheeler's Furniture shows the Bennetts' children as board members: Gregory Bennett, of Fresno, California; Rebecca Lindell, of Ozark; and Kimberly Robilotto, of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Wheeler’s Furniture operated in a historic building downtown, at South Avenue and Walnut Street, until 2008, and the south-side store opened in 2002.

The showroom has roughly 50 residential furniture lines, including Century, Hooker Furniture and Taylor King, according to its website.
