Unemployment rates improve in Springfield, across state

Unemployment rates in all of Missouri’s metropolitan statistical areas improved in April, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

Springfield’s five-county April jobless rate was 2.8 percent, better than the 3.2 percent rate in March, according to a news release.

The Springfield MSA comprising Greene, Christian, Webster, Polk and Dallas counties was the third-lowest unemployment rate among Missouri’s eight metro areas measured by the BLS.

The MSAs, in order of unemployment rates recorded in April, are:

  • Columbia, 2.3 percent, down from 2.6 percent in March;
  • Jefferson City, 2.7 percent, down from 3.1 percent;    
  • Springfield, 2.8 percent, down from 3.2 percent;
  • Joplin, 2.9 percent, down from 3.2 percent;
  • St. Joseph, 3 percent, down from 3.5 percent;
  • Cape Girardeau, 3.1 percent, down from 3.6 percent;
  • Kansas City, 3.3 percent, down from 3.6 percent; and
  • St. Louis, 3.3 percent, down from 3.7 percent.

The Show-Me State’s unemployment rate was 3.3 percent, an improvement from 3.8 percent in March. The BLS data is not seasonally adjusted.

Compared with April 2017, unemployment rates were lower in 305 of the 388 metro areas nationwide measured by the BLS, higher in 63 and unchanged in 20, according to the release.

Ames, Iowa, had the country’s lowest unemployment rate at 1.5 percent, according to the release, and Yuma, Arizona, had the highest unemployment rate at 15.7 percent.
