Two-year dean at MSU sheds interim title

Shawn Wahl, the interim dean for the Missouri State University College of Arts and Letters for nearly two years, was officially appointed to the position.

Wahl is shedding the interim title after a national search. His appointment is effective March 1, according to a news release.

“All seven of our academic programs continue to rise,” Wahl said in the release, referring to art and design; communication; English; media, journalism and film; modern and classical languages; music; and theater and dance.

“I am committed to advocating for transformational structures that provide our students high-quality learning conditions that help them prepare for jobs across industries,” he added.

Wahl officially succeeds Gloria Galanes, who retired in July 2017 after holding the top COAL job since 2012 and working for MSU since 1986, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

MSU officials could not be reached by deadline for salary information and the number of applications received for the job.

Wahl previously was head of the MSU communication department 2012-17, and he has researched communication education, college teaching, university leadership and higher education applications of intercultural interaction, according to the release.

MSU Provost Frank Einhellig pointed to Wahl serving as president in 2016 of the Central States Communication Association for the role, along with completing a fellowship at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education Management Development that same year.
