Travellers House nears opening at Boomer Town

Posted online

Travellers House Coffee LLC is targeting an opening next month for its second full location at Boomer Town Studios across from Missouri State University.

The company, which does business as Travellers House Coffee & Tea, expects to open Sept. 6 at the 824 S. National Ave. development, said co-owner Greg Venturella. Boomer Town opened in July, a company official said via Facebook Messenger.

“Being near MSU was part of our original plans. We never could find a location that was suitable,” said Venturella, who with his wife Cherie opened Travellers House at 2151 W. Republic Road in Republic Plaza in April 2016.

Venturella said he struck up a friendship with Boomer Town developer Entrust Property Solutions LLC’s Brent Brown, who’s a patron at Travellers House’s south-side store. That led to Venturella signing a lease for undisclosed terms to occupy 2,700 square feet — 300 square feet larger than the original store — at Brown’s development.

“We’ll have a cool courtyard between the two buildings with outdoor seating,” Venturella said. “It offers a lot of potential.”

Venturella said he and wife invested about $250,000 on the new store, covering infill work, new equipment and decor.

Similar to the south-side shop, Venturella said the new location would serve a variety of beverages, such as its chai latte and Darjeeling tea, as well as an increased food presence that includes sandwiches and desserts.

“We’ve learned a lot from our main store. We’re building the kitchen a little bit nicer,” he said, noting Travellers House is partnering with Tortilleria Perches on breakfast burritos.

Travellers House’s plans at Boomer Town come amid an expansion for the company.

In March, the company opened a bistro location inside Birch Pointe Health and Rehabilitation, 3705 S. Jefferson Ave. Venturella said Travellers House also is planning to open a bistro shop inside Life360 Church’s new campus at the former Palace theater in Chesterfield Village. He believed Life360 officials would have a soft opening for the new church in a couple weeks.

Last year, Travellers House posted $425,000 in revenue, Venturella said, noting sales are growing between 15 and 25 percent month to month this year compared with 2017.

“People love our place. We’ve got a great product,” he said. “There’s a lot of coffee shops in Springfield and they all do well.

“I believe a rising tide floats all ships.”
