Timmons Hall to open after 4 years of restoration work

Four years after crews relocated a 444,000-pound stone church, the building is reopening as a community center.

Now called Timmons Hall, the event center is scheduled for a June 29 opening in Silver Springs Park, 1100 N. Hampton Ave., according to a news release.

Springfield-Greene County Park Board Public Information Administrator Jenny Fillmer Edwards said the nonprofit Friends of Timmons Temple raised $210,127 in cash donations. Additionally, an estimated $90,000-$100,000 worth of in-kind donations included labor and supplies provided by trade unions, contractors and other businesses.

“The move alone cost $105,000, including lifting, moving and placing on a new foundation,” she said.

The 2015 relocation of the former Timmons Temple Church of God in Christ was necessitated by Greenway Studios LLC’s microefficiency apartment plans at the church’s former 934 E. Webster St. site near Silver Springs Park. The move required street closures and temporary removal of signs and streetlights, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

At the church that served Springfield’s African-American community for more than 80 years, crews worked over the last four years to add a new roof, front entrance, windows, HVAC and to restore the interior with 1932-style paint and fixtures, among other features. Friends of Timmons Temple is continuing to raise funds for future restoration work, according to the release.

“Many didn’t think it was possible, and we almost didn’t think it was,” Friends of Timmons Temple President Paula Ringer said in the release. “This project is a monument to having faith.”

The building is owned by the Park Board under the direction of Christine Peoples, its new coordinator.
