Team Taco time in Rountree

Posted online

More than a year after the venture’s name was announced, Team Taco LLC began operations Tuesday in the Rountree neighborhood.

Housed in the former home of Elle’s Patisserie LLC, the 1454 E. Cherry St. restaurant is co-owned by Cary Harris, Daniel Stern, Brent Sonnemaker and Doug Riddle. The building is painted bright red, in stark contrast to the purple paint that previously covered the building when it served as a patisserie.

The new business’ menu features multiple taco options, including a taco of the week selection, along with nacho plates and rice bowls with choice of protein. Prices run from $3.50-$10, according to the restaurant website.

In addition to food, Team Taco also includes an agave-focused spirit and cocktail menu featuring choices such as a Moscow mule, Oaxacan old fashioned and margaritas, according to a news release. A limited selection of beer, wine, cider and nonalcoholic drinks also are available.

“We are incredibly excited to be doing what we love the most, making great food in a great neighborhood,” Stern said in the release.

In June 2018, the Cherry Street property transferred to Cherry Street United LLC, organized by Robert Sonnemaker, from the Joyce A. Feldman Trust, according to Springfield Business Journal archives. Later that same month, the property’s new ownership announced the Team Taco name. Elle Feldman closed Elle’s Patisserie in January 2018, with the property listed for sale at $200,000.

“As a Rountree resident, I love being able to bring this cool idea to the neighborhood,” Stern said in the release.

It’s not the first food venture for the Team Taco leadership.

With his wife Carrie, Robert Sonnemaker formerly owned Social on Patton, for which Riddle at one time served as beverage manager and Stern was executive chef. Management announced in May via Social on Patton’s website a June 30 closing for the restaurant and bar at 314 S. Patton Ave.

Ownership did not return messages seeking comment about startup costs for the new restaurant.

Team Taco joins other food and drink businesses within walking distance of one another, including Cherry Picker Package and Fare, Tie & Timber Beer Co. and Imo’s Pizza.

On its Facebook page, Tie & Timber announced Tuesday the release of Skeleton Brew, a special beer brewed in collaboration with Team Taco. The brew is available at both establishments, according to the post.
