SPS board approves facilities task force, names co-chairs

The Springfield Public Schools Board of Education yesterday approved the creation of a Community Task Force on Facilities and named co-chairpersons to lead it.

In the wake of last year’s failed $120 million bond proposal, the task force will work to provide feedback and recommendations on SPS facilities, specifically to ensure they are safe and provide quality learning environments for students, according to a news release. The task force also will seek to determine whether a future bond proposal would be successful.

The board elected co-chairs Bridget Dierks, vice president of community programs for Community Foundation of the Ozarks, and David Hall, emergency manager for Missouri State University.

“I’ve been involved in the community for many years, and I know that our school system is one of the foundational pillars,” said David Hall, the former chief of the Springfield Fire Department, in the release. “I am willing to do anything to help our schools, and I’ll be evaluating opportunities from a holistic, community perspective.”

The SPS board also named Denise Fredrick and Tim Rosenbury as liaisons for the Community Task Force on Facilities. Members of the board of education, Fredrick is a former teacher and administrator at SPS and Rosenbury is managing partner of Butler, Rosenbury & Partners Inc.

SPS officials say a complete list of participants in the task force will be released in the future. Its membership will comprise 25-30 parents, students, teachers and community leaders. The members will be appointed by the board, according to the release.

The task force will meet twice a month with a goal of delivering recommendations by Oct. 15.
