Springfield Lasers again become champions

The Springfield Lasers are back-to-back King Trophy winners of the World TeamTennis championship.

The team, which had an 11-5 record heading into the final, on Aug. 3 defeated the New York Empire to earn the top WTT award in Las Vegas. It’s the second WTT victory for the 24-year-old team after last year’s win, according to a news release.

Trailing 17-15, Springfield’s Robert Lindstedt and Evan Song won in the finale men’s doubles match to clinch the victory for the Lasers.

“Being from Vegas and winning in an event like this, it’s just a dream for me,” Song said in the release. “It was an incredible atmosphere. I think I turned some of (the fans) into Springfield fans.”

Lindstedt, a second-year WTT player from Sweden, was named MVP of the WTT final.

Established in 1996 by the late Harry Cooper, the Lasers are owned by the Springfield-Greene Park Board and play home matches at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
