Halfway through the year, the Springfield-Branson National Airport is trending toward the 1 million-passenger benchmark.
Passengers totaled 504,295 through June, which is up 10 percent compared with last year at the same time and up 38 percent from the same period five years ago. In 2017, the airport came 6,871 passengers short of hitting its million-passenger goal, according to a news release.
“With the early growth we’re seeing, there’s an excellent chance 2018 will be the year we break the 1-million benchmark,” said Brian Weiler, the airport’s director of aviation, in the release.
Officials cited a strong local economy and the addition of nonstop flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, and Northwest Florida Regional Airport.
For the six-month period ended June 30, the airport also recorded:
• a 10.8 percent increase in airline flights to 4,625;
• a 16 percent jump in aviation fuel used to 3.8 million gallons; and
• a 5.9 percent bump in air cargo handled to 14.5 million pounds.
Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines provide nonstop flights to 13 destinations from the Springfield airport, according to the release.
The Republic School District is on track to open its Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-grade students for the 2025-26 academic year.
