Spring 2019 Construction in the Ozarks: Red’s Giant Hamburg

2301 W. Sunshine St.

Posted online

General contractor: Dock Brothers Construction Co.
Size: 4,508 square feet
Estimated cost: $750,000, per city permit
Estimated completion: July
Project description: Red’s Giant Hamburg is returning 35 years after the iconic Springfield restaurant closed. Dock Brothers Construction began general contracting work in January for the eatery by business partners David Campbell and Greg Iott. It’s going up adjacent to Furniture Factory Outlet in west Springfield. The original Red’s Giant Hamburg gained fame operating on Route 66 and for its status as the first restaurant with a drive-up window. Operated by Red and Julia Chaney, Red attempted to build his own sign but incorrectly measured the proportions, resulting in “Hamburg” rather than “Hamburger” in the name.
