Springfield-based SMC Packaging Group, a manufacturer of corrugated packaging founded in 1972, has been acquired.
Green Bay, Wisconsin-based Green Bay Packaging Inc. announced in a news release this morning that it closed May 31 on the purchase of SMC Packaging Group. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“For over five decades, our employee-owners have diligently provided quality products in a timely manner to our customers. Simultaneously, we have fostered a profitable and successful company deeply rooted in community values," said Kevin Ausburn, SMC Packaging Group chair and CEO, in the release. "As SMC Packaging Group expands beyond our founders' vision, we are ready to embark on the next chapter by joining Green Bay Packaging. Their shared commitment to employee well-being and community pride aligns perfectly with our philosophy."
Mark McNay, SMC Packaging Group vice president and general manager, was named president of the operation as part of the deal, the companies announced. He will report to Bryan Hollenbach, executive vice president of Green Bay Packaging.
The release indicates SMC Packaging Group will continue to operate as a corporation, 100% owned by Green Bay Packaging. Catharine Rathbone, corporate marketing and insights manager for Green Bay Packaging, said via email that Ausburn would remain an SMC employee in an advisory and leadership capacity.

The 550-employee SMC Packaging Group was founded in 1972 by Ross Ausburn and Charles Bachus. Founded in 1933, Green Bay Packaging has 41 facilities in 16 states.
The frame is in place for a multipurpose athletic facility on the grounds of Logan-Rogersville High School.
