Sheriff’s office: 417 Rentals owner still in critical condition after shooting

417 Rentals LLC owner Chris Gatley remains in critical condition after a shooting near Republic on Sunday, according to the Greene County sheriff’s office.

Cpl. James Craigmyle this morning declined to provide more information about the shooting or say which local hospital is treating Gatley. Both CoxHealth spokeswoman Kaitlyn McConnell and Mercy Springfield Communities spokeswoman Sonya Kullmann said their health system directories do not list Gatley.

“He is in critical condition,” Craigmyle said via email.

A sheriff’s office Facebook post on Jan. 27 indicated Gatley, 48, “was transported to the hospital for life-threatening injuries” after “deputies were dispatched to the 5800 block of West U.S. Highway 60 for a male with a gunshot wound.” The post called him “the victim in a shooting.”

Craigmyle said a Missouri Sunshine Law records request was required to obtain the sheriff’s report on the shooting but that “the information you will get is the same information we provided on social media.” Sheriff Jim Arnott told reporters it was unknown if the incident was a suicide attempt, according to KY3. Citing a 911 call, the KY3 report indicates Gatley’s girlfriend accidentally shot him in the chest.

The incident came 11 days after Gatley and 417 Rentals’ bankruptcy case was denied by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Western District of Missouri. The ruling followed a motion by the city of Springfield in 2018 to dismiss the case. City officials alleged 417 Rentals did not abide by court claims it would maintain its properties, complete necessary repairs and respond to ordinance violations, according to court documents.

417 Rentals filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in August 2017. In its initial petition last year, 417 Rentals listed 50-99 creditors, estimated assets of $1 million to $10 million and estimated liabilities of $1 million to $10 million, according to court records.

Since then, myriad homes have been foreclosed on, and banks involved in the case now may move forward with additional foreclosure sales with the dismissal of the bankruptcy petition.

In an amended reorganization plan submitted to the court on Aug. 10, 417 Rentals indicated it had loan balances at a dozen local banks. The combined fair market value of the properties is more than $32 million, Springfield Business Journal previously reported.

417 Rentals has come under fire on social media and in local media reports for various tenant issues, including allegations of overcharging and failure to make repairs, according to SBJ archives.
