The second Newk's Eatery in Springfield opened today at 220 W. Battlefield Road near the Campbell Avenue intersection.

Owned by franchisee Dan Garrett, president of Danco LLC, the new Newk’s is located at the site of the former Balboa Bed Co., which was demolished last year to make way for the restaurant. Newk’s franchisees spend between $932,000 and $1.3 million on new stores, as well as 5 percent royalties per month, according to Newks.com.

Memphis, Tennessee-based Horizon Construction LLC was general contractor on the 5,000-square-foot restaurant. Garrett originally was targeting a mid-December opening.

The restaurant on property owned by Garrett comprises 4,500 square feet and seats 172 people, including room for 30 on the patio. Total startup costs were $2.5 million, Garrett said. The new Queen City restaurant employs 77 people.

Garrett opened his first Newk’s in 2010 after working with his father operating McAlister's Deli franchises. His first in Springfield opened in 2012 at 2639 S. Glenstone Ave.

In addition to his Springfield Newk’s restaurants, Garrett also operates in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi. He’s looking to expand into Lexington, Kentucky, and Minneapolis. Garrett also is seeking to open a north-side restaurant in Springfield.
