Safety-Kleen awarded fresh permit for Springfield operation

Posted online

Richardson, Texas-based Safety-Kleen Systems Inc. was issued a renewed permit from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for its Springfield operation.

Safety-Kleen runs a commercial hazardous waste storage and transfer facility in Springfield at 735 N. West Bypass. The state DNR gave notice of a final hazardous waste permit for the facility, which stores solvents, paint wastes and waste oil generated by Safety-Kleen customers, according to a news release. Safety-Kleen submitted a renewal application in March 2017.

No one submitted feedback during the public comment period, according to DNR officials, but an appeal may be filed by Jan. 22. The DNR’s website indicates permits are issued on a 10-year basis.

Safety-Kleen previously also had a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency permit for the Springfield facility, but officials determined the DNR is fully authorized to provide permits for the location, according to the release.

According to its website, Safety-Kleen re-refines used oil and provides parts cleaning services in North America. The website points to more than 200,000 customer locations.
