Posted online

Steve Proffitt, co-founder of The Potter's House Inc., died last week.

Proffitt, 67, died Oct. 6 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, according to his obituary posted to the website of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. An online fundraiser last year, which brought in nearly $27,000, indicated Proffitt had a rare illness called smoldering myeloma-associated AL amyloidosis.

Proffitt founded the nonprofit coffee shop in 2000 with his wife, Berna. The nonprofit, which has a $150,000 annual budget, is a faith-based ministry sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene that sells coffee and some food, according to its website. It's located at 724 S. National Ave., across from Missouri State University.

The Potter's House website lists Steve and Berna Proffitt as co-executive directors.

Steve Proffitt served as a youth pastor, and briefly, as a police officer, before founding The Potter's House, according to his obituary. A celebration of life ceremony is scheduled Oct. 17 at Regalo Orchard in Springfield.

I went to the funeral. There were hundreds of people there. Two hours long, plus 5-hours of viewing. Great speeches!
