Popshelf to open Springfield store

Posted online

Popshelf, a division of Tennessee-based Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG), is launching a store in the Queen City.

Shannon Farley, leasing director for Ohio-based Chase Properties, the owner of Primrose Marketplace, said an early 2023 opening is planned at the Springfield retail center along South Glenstone Avenue. The company’s website lists a store coming soon at 3500 S. Glenstone Ave.

"They are taking the remaining balance of the Johnny Mac's space," Farley said via email.

Popshelf, stylized as pOpshelf in marketing materials, was launched in 2020 as a pricier option for Dollar General customers, according to media reports at the time. Popshelf.com lists items including household goods, office and school supplies, arts and crafts, electronics, and beauty and body products.

At Primrose Marketplace, the Johnny Mac's Sporting Goods space was partially occupied by Philadelphia-based discount chain Five Below Inc. (Nasdaq: FIVE) in 2019, according to past reporting. Johnny Mac's closed that same year.

Chase Properties' website indicates Popshelf is filling 11,796 square feet in the retail center.

The only remaining vacant space is 7,415 square feet between TJ Maxx and JoAnn Fabrics, according to the company's website. Anchor tenants in the 367,327-square-foot center include Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy and Burlington.
