Pop-up art shop emerges in Rountree

Posted online

The Rountree neighborhood is getting a bit more artistic for the holiday season with the addition of a pop-up art shop.

Andrea Petersburg opened The Local Bevy at 617 S. Pickwick Ave. to feature items from local artists. The shop launched Oct. 23 and is currently scheduled to be open through December.

“I thought if I don’t try this, I’m going to continue to think about it and I’ll never know if it can happen,” Petersburg said.

The shop near the intersection of Cherry Street and Pickwick Avenue marks the first storefront for Petersburg, who sells custom picture framing and macrame from her home through A. Petersburg Designs LLC.

“I like how Rountree is being built up with the commercial businesses and the idea that there’s a lot of walkability to park your car and go do things,” she said, noting the recently opened Artistree Pottery LLC is another art-focused venture. “I thought this would fit nicely with that neighborhood.”

Petersburg is the lone employee for the roughly 900-square-foot shop, but around 20 artists have wares for sale. She declined to disclose rental rates for the artists’ shop space. Startup costs were roughly $500, she said.

Items for sale include jewelry, stained glass, candles, paintings, greeting cards and fiber art. She said most pieces range $5-$200.

Petersburg is on a three-month lease for an undisclosed rate with JKH Properties LLC, but she isn’t ruling out being open beyond year’s end – either in the same Rountree space or elsewhere.

“After these three months, I’m unsure what will happen next,” she said. “But it’s exciting, it’s not a scary unsure.”

Aside from Artistree Pottery, other nearby business that opened this year in Rountree include The Royal, a live music and bar venue, and market and cafe Culture Counter.
