Parson picks Ransom for Supreme Court over local finalist

Posted online

Gov. Mike Parson yesterday announced the appointment of a judge to fill a vacant seat on the Supreme Court of Missouri, with a Springfield finalist falling short of the nomination.

Judge Robin Ransom, of St. Louis, was selected to succeed Laura Denvir Stith, who retired in March, according to a news release. Finalists were Judge Donald Burrell Jr., of Springfield, and Judge William Corrigan Jr., of Clayton.

"Judge Ransom will add valuable experience, perspective and balance to the court," Parson said in the release. "I have high confidence that she will continue to be a fair enforcer of the law, faithfully interpret the law as written and reasonably consider decisions made at the trial and appellate level in her own evaluation.”

Ransom previously was appointed by Parson in 2019 to serve on the Eastern District Court of Appeals. She has past experience as a circuit judge and family court commissioner for the city of St. Louis, as well as prosecuting attorney and public defender in St. Louis County.

The seven-member Supreme Court of Missouri is led by Chief Justice George Draper III, according to Courts.Mo.gov. The judges oversee the state's judicial branch.

The Appellate Judicial Commission on May 21 submitted Ransom, Burrell and Corrigan as finalists for the Supreme Court role, according to a separate news release.

Burrell is a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals Southern District in Springfield, and Corrigan is a circuit judge in the 21st Judicial Circuit of St. Louis County.

The Appellate Judicial Commission comprises Draper; Neil Chanter and Sally Hargis, of Springfield; Scott Bethune, of Kansas City; Timothy Drury and Thomas Neill, of St. Louis; and Kathy Ritter, of Columbia, according to the release.
