Ozarks Food Harvest again partnered with iHeartMedia over the weekend for an annual fundraising event that bested last year’s outcome.
The 21st annual Hungerthon, hosted by local radio personalities Kevin Howard and Liz Delany, brought in $156,564 — a record for the event — through yesterday morning, according to a news release. That compares with $140,168 collected during the 2018 radiothon, in which volunteers accepted financial pledges to support Ozarks Food Harvest’s weekend backpack program that sends food home with school children.
“Liz and I have been doing this for 21 years, and this has been our most successful Hungerthon yet,” said Kevin Howard, co-host of “The Kevin and Liz Show” on KGBX-FM, in the release. “We couldn’t be more proud to be affiliated with Ozarks Food Harvest for all the hard work they do to make sure kids are going to have food to eat on the weekends.”
The money raised will go toward providing backpacks with food for 522 at-risk children for every weekend of the school year. Overall, the backpack program supports more than 1,600 kids in 59 Springfield schools and across the Ozarks.
Businesses and organizations, including Commerce Bank, CoxHealth and Kum & Go, matched backpack funding donations made over the weekend, according to the release.
Ozarks Food Harvest provides more than 18.3 million meals annually to over 261,000 individuals across 28 Ozarks counties.
