Opinion: Lifting as we climb

Posted online

First, congratulations to this year’s class of Springfield Business Journal’s Men of the Year. This recognition is well earned – and well deserved. It represents the long hours, the quiet sacrifices, the leadership moments when no one was watching and the commitment each of you has made to making Springfield better in your own way.

When I was selected for the 2024 class, I was deeply honored. But I was also reminded of how much of our work is done behind the scenes. We often don’t do what we do for the spotlight, but because we see a need – and we choose to respond. This award doesn’t just highlight success; it affirms purpose.

You’ve each found a way to lead in your corner of the community, whether through business, service, mentoring or innovation. And I hope you take a moment to really sit with that. Celebrate. Reflect. Let it sink in that your presence and your effort are making a difference.

I also encourage you to use this recognition as fuel – fuel to keep building, mentoring, supporting and advocating. We live in a city that grows stronger when leaders like you stay engaged. Springfield thrives not just because of the big moves, but because of the daily decisions made by people who care. That includes you.

As leaders, we have a role in shaping a more inclusive Springfield – one where everyone feels a sense of belonging, regardless of their background or identity. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when we’re intentional about who we invite to the table, who we listen to and who we lift up.

This honor comes with a kind of responsibility – not pressure, but purpose. You now have a platform to elevate others. Someone is watching how you lead, how you give back, how you treat people. And they’re learning from you.

One of the phrases I live by is, “Lift as you climb.” As you continue on your path – whether it’s in business, community work or personal development – remember that our collective success depends on how we show up for others. Pull someone up with you. Make room at the table. Be part of building the community we all want to see.

To the 2025 honorees: thank you for showing up, for stepping up and for staying rooted in purpose. I hope this recognition reminds you of just how valuable you are to this community. Keep going. Keep building. And don’t forget: Springfield is better because you’re in it.

Congratulations again.
