Open for Business: The Plant Room

Posted online

The Plant Room
After starting in 2020 as an e-commerce business selling plants and seeds, City’s Edge Botanicals LLC rebranded as owner Emma Fear opened her first brick-and-mortar shop June 1. Dubbed The Plant Room by City’s Edge Botanicals, the shop fills 900 square feet at 1349 S. Glenstone Ave, Ste. H. It was formerly occupied by Homewrecker Vintage LLC, which is next door, Fear said. She subleases the space for undisclosed terms from Homewrecker Vintage owner Lia Latham. Startup costs were around $10,000, Fear said, adding her husband, Brandon, uses some of the shop for growing microgreens through Springfield Microgreens LLC. The Plant Room sells everyday and exotic plants. Common varieties include pothos, cactuses and begonias. Hoyas and monsteras are among rare plants sold at the shop, which also carries seeds, macrame and pots. Fear started the venture last summer and realized a shop was needed to accommodate her growing number of houseplants for sale.

Old Route 66 Wellness
Four months after launching its first dispensary in Springfield, the second shop of Old Route 66 Wellness LLC opened March 17 at 1421 W. State Highway J in Ozark. John Lopez said he co-owns the venture with Matt Campbell, Kristy Endacott and unnamed partners. Lopez said startup costs for the shop were around $200,000. He declined to disclose the five-year lease rate with Help U Sell Realty Choices. While the shop passed the state’s commencement inspection in November 2020, Lopez said medical marijuana supply shortages led ownership to delay its opening until March. He said the store, which employs 20, occupies 3,500 square feet in space vacated by Family Video. The dispensary sells cannabis flower, pre-rolled joints and marijuana-infused products, such as vaporizers, edibles, drinks and concentrates. Old Route 66 Wellness was the first company to open a medical marijuana dispensary in the Springfield area at 2823 N. Glenstone Ave.

ADsmith Marketing and Advertising
After 20 years in Plaza Towers, ADsmith Marketing and Advertising moved April 5 to 1200 E. Woodhurst Drive, Bldg. S, Ste. 100. Owner Angela Smith said the move allows the digital media, branding and design agency more flexible workspaces, noting the duplex combines a home and office environment feel that boosts creativity. President Ken Taylor said a portion of the building is being renovated to a large studio that will allow for expanded photo and video capabilities, and that can double as an event or meeting space. BP Builders LLC is the general contractor for the project that is expected to wrap in August. Taylor, Smith and her partner, David Doran, purchased the 5,855-square-foot, two-story building for an undisclosed amount from Wayne Hlavacek. Doran, a criminal defense attorney, also works from the space, as well as tenant Sleepsana. ADsmith, which has 14 staff members, occupies roughly two-thirds of the building.
