Open for Business: The Hangout

Posted online

The Hangout
Designed as a private karaoke experience, The Hangout opened Jan. 19 in the Plaza Shopping Center at 1938 S. Glenstone Ave., Ste. C. Owned and operated by Randall Hang and his mother Stacy Kue, the 1,340-square-foot operation features karaoke television, dubbed KTV, where participants sit in private rooms to sing rather than in front of strangers on a stage. Kue said there are five rooms available for rent, with smaller rooms for a few people priced at $20-$25 per hour and $30-$35 per hour for large rooms. Two rooms can open up to hold around 20 people, she added, with all of them equipped with a karaoke system. A menu of mostly finger foods, such as crab rangoon, chicken wings and egg rolls, are served, as is beer and cocktails. Startup costs were around $80,000, Kue said, with the business on a two-year lease with Plaza Investments LLC for an undisclosed rate.

The Big Biscuit
An Overland Park, Kansas-based breakfast and lunch eatery extended into the Springfield market with the May 7 opening of The Big Biscuit. The first of two planned restaurants opened at 2920 S. Glenstone Ave., in Brentwood Center South. A second is slated by mid-July at 3620 S. Campbell Ave., in Kickapoo Corners. Jason Paetzold, a 1997 Southwest Baptist University graduate, is a partner in the company with Jay Carpenter, David Offerdahl and Chad Offerdahl. The partners operate 14 other Big Biscuit eateries in the greater Kansas City area. General Manager David Terpening leads a staff of 50 at the 3,915-square-foot Brentwood Center spot. Most items on the southern-inspired menu range between $6 and $9, Paetzold said. Startup costs and lease terms were not disclosed for either of the planned restaurants. A building permit on file with the city for the Kickapoo Corners restaurant lists a declared valuation of $140,000 for the infill. A declared valuation is not listed on city permits for the Brentwood Center space.
