Swirly’s Ice Cream & Waffles
Food trailer Swirly’s Ice Cream & Waffles began serving cool treats July 15 in Springfield. The mobile ice cream business plans to regularly be parked at 3867 S. Campbell Ave. in the Parkcrest Center, said Jack Powderly, who co-owns Swirly’s with wife Kenzie. Powderly said startup costs were $40,000, which included $30,000 for the trailer. The Ozark couple is subleasing space for the next year in the shopping center from Brad Peterson of BJP Properties LLC. Powderly declined to disclose the rate. The ice cream machine used by Swirly’s mixes dozens of ingredients into a chocolate or vanilla base to craft its frozen concoctions. Additionally, the eatery sells bubble waffles that can serve as a cone substitute or as a standalone item, Powderly said. Prices range $3-$9. Powderly said he worked the past two years as a nurse, most recently for Mercy Springfield Communities. While his wife will help at Swirly’s, she primarily works at Revive Beauty Co. LLC in Ozark, a hair salon she opened in January, Powderly said.
