Springfieldian Daniel Ogunyemi was chosen for a nationwide racial equity and social justice program.

Ogunyemi, Ozarks Technical Community College's director of diversity, equity and inclusion, is among 50 leaders announced July 10 for the inaugural class of The Memorial Foundation's Social Justice Fellows Program. He's the only person from Missouri on the list.

"The Social Justice Fellows Program was created to invest in the development of our future leaders and instill the democracy, justice, hope and love that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrated in his pursuit for equality," said Harry Johnson Sr., president and CEO of The Memorial Foundation, in a news release.

Ogunyemi and the other Social Justice Fellows participants are slated to convene virtually this summer for programming, including curriculum and a distinguished lecture series. After completing the program, they will travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with congressional leaders who are fighting for social justice. The class was selected through an application process that started in May.

The eight-week program includes conversations of building social change movements, media engagement and influence, lessons in systemic racism and perspectives on social justice, according to the release.

“The movement for justice and equality has historically been fueled by the fire and vigor of young leaders,” said Roland Martin, chair of The Memorial Foundation Social Justice Fellows Program’s distinguished lecture series, in the release. “I am thrilled to work with the leaders of today’s civil rights movement as they pick up where my generation left off."

The Washington, D.C.-based Memorial Foundation promotes awareness of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in the Capital.
