MSU board to consider renaming academic building after Blunt

Posted online

The Missouri State University Board of Governors is scheduled to consider the renaming of an academic building to honor exiting U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Missouri.

If given board approval on Dec. 15, Temple Hall would change to Roy Blunt Hall, according to the meeting agenda.

The measure cites work Blunt has undertaken in Washington, D.C., to support MSU and to provide funding for sciences and research. Temple Hall is the home of MSU's College of Natural and Applied Sciences.

"Sen. Blunt led advocacy efforts that resulted in the appropriation of more than $56 million in federal funds to support health, life and physical science research, teaching and facilities on the Springfield and West Plains campuses," the MSU board agenda states, indicating $50 million of the funds would go toward an addition and renovation project at Temple Hall.

The measure states Blunt has worked to increase the budget for the National Institutes of Health each year, culminating in a $15 million addition to the NIH budget, and to quintuple Alzheimer's research funding.

Built in 1971, the academic hall was named after Allen Temple, MSU's science department head for nearly 40 years in the early 1900s. According to the agenda, Temple would continue to be honored with a display in the building, should the board approve the renaming.

The meeting agenda also includes a resolution for the addition and renovation project at Temple Hall. The project, which has a budget of $80 million, includes a proposal for the board to hire The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. to perform construction manager services to the tune of $5.2 million.

I would rather they put up a Plaque for Old Roy in the lobby than rename the building. For us Alumni that went there, would rather keep the TEMPLE name.

Or since Old Roy has a History Master's Degree from SMS, SMSU, MSU, they should rename the History Hall, Hill Hall, for Roy Blunt. Just a thought.

Oh My! I think that is a slap in the face for the Temple family and everyone involved, the history of the building. It seems very inappropriate to remove a person's legacy such as this. A very tacky move indeed. Then of course there is his bad press these past few years, the "dirty dozen" I heard they call him.
