Mercy brings in new local president

Posted online

Mercy named a new president to succeed Jon Swope as leader of the health care system’s local operations.

Craig McCoy, who most recently was CEO of Bon Secours St. Francis Health System in Greenville, South Carolina, brings 10 years of experience as a health system chief executive to Mercy Springfield Communities, according to a news release.

“Being able to care for people in what is often their greatest time of need is very privileged work,” McCoy said in the release. “Working in faith-based health care is truly all about being God’s people taking care of God’s people. As a ministry, it goes beyond the walls of our facilities to improve the status of our communities.”

Swope led the Springfield-based health care system while also serving as president of the larger Mercy Central Region. He’s also a senior vice president for Mercy, a role he’s maintaining, according to the release.

Swope took over at Mercy Springfield Communities in an interim capacity in fall 2017, amid allegations of patient safety infractions and a federal investigation. Former President Dr. Alan Scarrow was ousted from his position during that time, though he remains a Mercy neurosurgeon.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had threatened to terminate Mercy Hospital Springfield’s Medicare agreement over allegations of abuse or neglect of patients in 2017, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

In spring 2019, McCoy stepped down from his CEO position at Bon Secours, according to a report from the Greenville Journal.

Bon Secours spokeswoman Jennifer Robinson confirmed via email that McCoy left the health care system in March 2019, but she did not provide a reason for the exit.

McCoy also has worked as CEO of Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, Emory Johns Creek Hospital in Johns Creek, Georgia, and Paradise Valley Hospital in Phoenix, according to his LinkedIn profile.

At Mercy, McCoy reports to Swope, said spokeswoman Sonya Kullmann. She said Mercy Hospital Springfield President and Chief Operating Officer Brent Hubbard will report to McCoy.

In fall 2019, Mercy announced Dr. Robert Cavagnol, president of Mercy Clinic Springfield, exited the health care system. Justin Davison, vice president of finance, accepted a job elsewhere in Missouri, SBJ previously reported.
