Mercy Springfield Communities this morning broke ground on a new clinic in the northwest quadrant of the Queen City.

The $6 million clinic, at 3530 W. Mount Vernon St., is slated for completion in fall 2023, according to a news release.

“This area of Springfield is booming with both housing and businesses,” said Dr. Brad Wyrsch, president of Mercy Clinic Springfield Communities, in the release. “We don’t want patients to have to travel far for care, so we’re being very intentional about looking forward and planning our growth to meet the community’s growth and needs.”

The nearly 11,000-square-foot clinic, on the corner of Mount Vernon and West Bypass next to Walmart Neighborhood Market, is designed with 12 exam rooms for primary care and five exam rooms for occupational medicine. A physical therapy space will have multiple treatment areas, including an outdoor portion, according to the release, and all areas will have access to imaging for patients needing X-rays.

DeWitt & Associates Inc. is serving as general contractor for the project designed by Buf Studio, according to spokesperson Sonya Kullmann.

Mercy is targeting a spring 2023 opening for a separate, $3.2 million clinic at 1718 W. Woodland St., according to past reporting. The health care system is replacing its Mercy Clinic Family Medicine – South Creek clinic with a new building that is 1,500 square feet larger.

I often wonder why both major hospitals in Springfield continue to build new facilities and do major expansions when they can't hire adequate staff in existing units?
