The Springfield-Greene County Park Board has temporarily closed Jordan Valley Ice Park after a mechanical failure resulted in ice loss.

Officials expect at least a three-week closure, pending delivery and installation of specialty parts and supplies, according to a news release. The mechanical issue occurred over the weekend in the facility's internal ice plant that keeps the ice rink surface frozen.

"This is a real disappointment for all of us, especially as we head into cooler fall temperatures and the holiday season,” said Bob Belote, director of the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, in the release. “We’re working hard to bring the ice plant back online, and we really hope we’ll be able to reopen the ice park soon.”

Park Board spokesperson Jenny Fillmer Edwards said via email it's too early to estimate repair costs or lost revenue from the temporary closure. The Park Board is currently working with contractors to assess the scope of repairs needed, said Miles Park, assistant parks director over operations.

"We are hoping to resume/reschedule most of our programs," Edwards said.

It's only the second unplanned ice loss for the attraction in its nearly 21-year history, Edwards said. Another mechanical incident occurred in August 2019.

The ice park has two rinks used for open-skate sessions, hockey and figure skating.

The attraction previously had been known as the Mediacom Ice Park. The telecommunications company chose not to renew its sponsorship in early 2019, according to past reporting.
