McDonald’s shifts gears for Ozarks Food Harvest fundraiser

Posted online

An annual McDonald’s fundraiser for Ozarks Food Harvest is switching up its tactics.

This year, the fundraiser is called Coffee for a Cause, a departure from the 2008-17 Cans for Coffee initiative. According to a news release, Cans for Coffee collected more than 215,000 meals for Ozarks Food Harvest during its span. The campaign called on customers to donate a canned food item in exchange for a small McCafe beverage.

This year for the campaign, which runs Nov. 10-16, McDonald’s restaurants in the Ozarks will donate 25 cents from each cup of McCafe coffee purchased. Each of the more than 25 restaurants have pledged to donate up to $1,000 to Ozarks Food Harvest. To reach $1,000 apiece, each restaurant would need to sell 4,000 McCafe cups of coffee.

“They are moving away from Cans for Coffee and now introducing Coffee for a Cause,” said Denise Gibson, development and communication director at Ozarks Food Harvest, in an email this morning. “It will be much easier for each store to implement and could potentially have a greater impact on food assistance by providing the financial resources rather than the canned food items. We are excited about the inaugural year and are hoping for great success.”

As part of Coffee for a Cause, Springdale, Arkansas-based Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE: TSN) tomorrow is scheduled to deliver a donation to the tune of 40,000 pounds of chicken to Ozarks Food Harvest.

The donation adds to more than 398,000 pounds of chicken Tyson has gifted to the Springfield nonprofit since 2008, according to a separate news release.

Ozarks Food Harvest officials indicated protein is among the most requested items for clients served by the nonprofit, and the Tyson donation will help feed thousands of southwest Missouri families.
