McDonald’s demolition to make way for new restaurant

Posted online

Demolition work has begun at a McDonald’s restaurant that’s been closed for nearly a year.

Springfield Business Journal this morning observed a wrecking crew tearing down the 501 W. Sunshine St. property.

Site work documentation on Grain Valley-based general contractor J.E. Hefner Co.’s website shows plans to build a new McDonald’s restaurant on the site, following the demolition work. Officials with J.E. Hefner and McDonald’s could not be reached for comment by deadline.

The McDonald’s restaurant closed in early summer 2018 after a fire caused interior and exterior damages, according to an Ozarks First report. It hasn’t reopened since the incident.

The property is owned by McDonald’s Real Estate Co. and has an appraised valuation of $1 million, according to Greene County assessor records. A building permit on file with the city did not list the estimated cost of the demolition and construction process.

The restaurant is located across the street from Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, which brought in 1.6 million visitors during its first year after reopening in September 2017. The area also is being considered for a convention center and multiple hotels, according to past SBJ reporting.
