Springfield Mayor Ken McClure plans to run for a third term.
McClure confirmed he would seek reelection in 2021 after a letter to supporters surfaced on Facebook.
In the letter, McClure cited challenges for the city and the local economy during the coronavirus pandemic. He's been among local government officials who first enacted a stay-at-home order in March and began a gradual reopening that started in April. City Council in July approved a citywide face mask mandate in effect through Oct. 14. This week, McClure extended the city's civil emergency order related to the pandemic through Oct. 13, according to a news release.
"As mayor during a pandemic, I have had to make agonizing decisions I never could have anticipated. We have focused decision-making on local needs, while also working with you to develop preparations for reopening and recovery," McClure said in the letter. "But I know our community is still experiencing pain and dealing with economic fallout related to the virus.
"I am grateful for your sacrifices, and I want to assure you that I have done everything in my power to provide clarity in the face of overwhelming uncertainty and to make the best decisions with the best information available."
McClure currently is the only Springfield mayoral candidate to file paperwork with the Missouri Ethics Commission for the April 6, 2021, election. During the July quarterly report filed July 7, McClure's campaign reported $10,861 in money on hand, according to the MEC.
McClure said he likely would not make a formal announcement for his reelection bid.
In 2017, McClure was sworn in for his first term as mayor. He was reelected in 2019.
